Grand Rapids Evangelical Free Church
Evangelical Free /Church in Grand Rapids, MN
Immediately after the Good Friday Community Service, we invite you to sign up for a one-hour time slot to spend in prayer and to abstain from at least one meal during the next 24 hours or fast for a time from something that has a grip on you and is hard to give up. Read more below.
24-Hours of Prayer
Starting Friday at 8:00 pm to Saturday at 8:00 am, we encourage people to find a quiet place at their home to pray. From 8:00 am on Saturday to 8:00 pm that evening, we encourage you to come to church for an hour of prayer. We will have prayer prompts available, and a chance to place your sins on the cross in a symbolic gesture of acknowledgement of your sin that led Jesus to the cross. We are hoping to have every hour during the 24-hour period covered in prayer by someone in our church family, so if you are willing to commit to an hour of prayer, please follow the link below and sign up for a spot (Note, if you sign up for a spot between 8 am and 8 pm on Saturday, this must be done at church so it is not left empty and unlocked). If all spots are filled, or you don’t want to commit to a certain time frame, you’re encouraged to choose any hour that works best for you.
Fasting
The purpose of fasting isn’t to just stop eating, it is to abstain from something to spend that time in prayer. If you can coordinate it with your one-hour of prayer time (above) that would be ideal.
Fasting isn’t just from food, though that is the most common form of fasting. You can also fast from other things: your phone, gaming, social media, etc. Then, when you feel the urge to experience that thing that has a grip on you, you spend that time in prayer instead. We’re encouraging you to fast from something for the length one meal to the next, so about 4-6 hours if you’re able. If you choose to fast for the entire 24-hours, that is up to you. We, of course, discourage anyone from fasting from food who has any special dietary concerns or needs food for medical purposes. You do not need to tell us or anyone if you are fasting and what you are fasting from. It is between you and the Lord. Please read more on fasting here.
