YHWH's people, having previously promised that they would hold to God's covenant, are found worshiping a cast idol when Moses comes down from the mountain of God. We often wonder how they could have gotten spiritual amnesia so quickly, but we often do the same. God gives us, just like the Israelites, a choice: Choose Him, repent and follow His ways, or face the dire consequences that God hands you.

The second book of the Torah, Exodus is not just a record of God’s actions to rescue His people; It is a personal record and account of God’s person, character, and nature on full display for all the nations to see and revere Him alone.
